New York Fashion Week brings the creme da la creme of the fashion industry together for a full week of inspiration. For the third year in a row, INIKA Organic was invited to create makeup looks for high-profile designers using clean and vegan beauty products.
Our team takes you behind-the-scenes and explains exactly how they created the makeup looks for Chocheng’s colourful NYFW show.
The lowdown on Chocheng’s NYFW show
The brand’s designer Cho Cho Cheng is no stranger to the cinema. He always turns to iconic women in film to find inspiration for his luxe collections - and this year was no different. For his NYFW show, he was inspired by Shirley MacLaine’s style in the 1960s drama, The Apartment. In the movie, she made a statement when she paired a tuxedo with a bold lip - and Chocheng did the same when she sent models down the runway in impeccably tailored pieces.
The collection was all about chic silhouettes, colour blocking and the details that elevate an outfit, like hand-sewen petals. Just like INIKA, Cho Cheng is committed to making her brand as sustainable as possible, and every piece was made with natural and cruelty-free fabrics.
The NYFW makeup artist
To complement the clothes and her eco-friendly ethics, Cho Cheng enlisted Campbell Ritchie, a makeup artist and clean beauty advocate. In her 20-year career, she's worked on some of the most famous faces in the world, including Kate Moss, and has made a name for herself for makeup looks that let models' skin shine through.
A step-by-step guide to the Chocheng NYFW makeup look
As always, for Campbell, skincare comes first. Since the show took place in the middle of a New York winter, she prepped the model’s skin before creating a pared-back makeup look that was all about the bold lip.
'We wanted to play off the masculine/feminine inspiration, so we decided to go with a bold lip,' Campbell said.
'Since everyone’s skin right now is dry, sensitive, and irritated from the winter weather, I really wanted to focus on making the skin beautiful and clean. INIKA Organic’s skincare line is so hydrating and creates a healthy, glowy look,' Campbell said.
Here's how she used INIKA's best natural skincare and sustainable makeup to help the models to channel Shirley MacLaine.
Skin
- Remove all traces of makeup with the Certified Organic Makeup Remover, and deeply cleanse skin with the Certified Organic Micellar Cleansing Rosewater, a gentle solution that won’t strip the skin.
- Massage the Phyto-Active Botanical Face Oil all over the face, focusing on any areas that are particularly dry, like around the nose. Campbell loves this all-natural face moisturiser for sensitive skin as it’s super-nourishing but doesn’t leave a greasy residue.
- Pat the Certified Organic Matte Perfection Primer on the T-zone and eyelids to reduce shine.
- Smooth out uneven skin tone with the Phyto-Active Rosehip Oil Blend. Give it two minutes to absorb into the skin before moving on to makeup.
Base
- Using the Vegan Stippling Brush, apply the Certified Organic BB Cream over the face. Campbell wanted to enhance what the models already had, not cover it, so she opted for a lightweight BB cream instead of foundation.
- Add definition to the cheekbones and temples with the help of the Baked Contour Duo and Vegan Contouring Angle Brush.
- Dust the Baked Mineral Blush Duo on the apples of the cheeks. The goal? “Mimic a flushed look, like the models just stepped in from a brisk walk in Central Park,” Campbell explained.
- Dab a little bit of the Baked Mineral Illuminisor to the top of the cheekbones to highlight.
- Set the base with the Mineral Mattifying Powder
Eyes
- To make the eyes look awake and refreshed, line the inner eyeliner with the Certified Organic Lip Pencil in Buff.
- With your finger, apply the Certified Organic Cream Illuminisor in Gold across the entire eyelid.
- Use the darker shade from the Pressed Mineral Eye Shadow Duo in Gold/Oyster to line the upper eyelid.
- Dab the Baked Mineral Illuminisor to the inner corners of the eyes.
- Apply a coat of the Curvy Lash Vegan Mascara in Black, the best natural mascara, to lengthen the lashes.
Lips
- Now for the main attraction (and a big NYFW spring 2020 trend): the bold lip. To begin, prep the lips with Certified Organic Lip Balm, the best natural lip balm for dry, chapped lips.
- Mix the Lip Crayon in Chili Red and Rose Petal to create the perfect, rich red and apply to the lips.
- Dot the Loose Mineral Eye Shadow in Whisper to the cupid's bow.
Brows
- Fill in any sparse areas and add depth with the Certified Organic Brow Pencil, then groom the brows with a few swipes of the Brow Perfector.
